Our verdict: online casinos offer three kinds of poker — player-vs-player poker, casino poker against the dealer and video poker against a machine. Skill changes the result mainly in player-vs-player poker, where the site earns from the rake taken from each pot
| Type | You play against | How the site earns | Skill effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player-vs-player poker | Other players | Rake (part of each pot) | Large |
| Casino poker | The dealer | House edge | Small |
| Video poker | A machine | Pay table | Medium (hold strategy) |
Want to play online poker in Japan? Here is the short version. Among the sites that accept Japanese players and that we checked from a Japanese IP address, Stake is the one with a real player-versus-player poker room (Stake Poker: Hold’em, Omaha, cash games and tournaments, with 3.5% rakeback). If you would rather play poker against the dealer, Vera&John, InterCasino, Kajitabi and Mystino all run live Casino Hold’em tables from $0.50 a hand, plus RNG poker games you can try in demo mode.
Offline, Japan has one of the busiest poker scenes in Asia, but it works differently from Las Vegas or Macau: poker bars and big festivals such as the Japan Open Poker Tour (JOPT) run as “amusement” poker with no cash prizes. This guide covers both sides: the best poker sites for players in Japan, what the law says, how the live scene works for visitors, free poker apps, quick rules and the maths behind rake and house edge. Everything was checked between September 27 and October 5, 2026.

Best online poker sites for players in Japan compared
There are two very different products behind the word “poker” at an online casino. A poker room seats you with other players and takes a small cut of each pot (the rake). Casino poker — Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud — puts you against the dealer at fixed payouts, so the house edge decides the long-run result. Most Japan-facing casinos only offer the second kind. The table below shows exactly what each site had on the day we checked.
| Site | Poker room (vs players) | Live dealer poker | RNG poker | Site language | Licence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stake | ✓ Stake Poker | Casino Hold’em, Texas Hold’em Bonus, Extreme Texas Hold’em, Caribbean Stud, Triple Card Poker | Casino Poker (Table One) | Japanese site, English terms | Curaçao OGL/2024/1451/0918 |
| — | Casino Hold’em, Bet on Poker, Video Poker Live, Casino Hold’em Live (Paris), 2 Hand Casino Hold’em | Three Card Poker Deluxe, Hold’em Poker, High Hand Hold’em, Casino Hold’em, Russian Poker, In Between Poker | English & Japanese | Curaçao OGL/2024/175/0182 | |
| Kajitabi | — | Casino Hold’em (3 tables), Extreme Texas Hold’em, Texas Hold’em Bonus, Caribbean Stud, Triple Card Poker, Bet on Poker, Jacks or Better | Video poker (listed in its bonus terms) | Japanese | Anjouan ALSI-202505046-FI2 |
| InterCasino | — | Same five tables as Vera&John | Three Card Poker Deluxe, Hold’em Poker, High Hand Hold’em, Casino Hold’em, Russian Poker | English & Japanese | Curaçao OGL/2024/175/0182 |
| — | Casino Hold’em, Bet on Poker Live, Video Poker, Casino Hold’em Live (Paris) | — | English & Japanese | Anjouan ALSI-202505010-FI1 | |
| Queen Casino | QUEENPoker section (login required) | — | Caribbean Stud, Video Poker, Deuces Wild | Japanese, English menu | Curaçao OGL/2024/1635/0968 — “Expired” on the CGA register |
Checked from a Japanese IP: Stake on September 27, Kajitabi and Mystino on October 3, Vera&John, InterCasino and Queen Casino on October 5, 2026. A dash means we did not see the product in the lobby on that day.
Two practical points. First, the only full poker room in this list is Stake Poker; we did not find a peer-to-peer poker client at Vera&John, InterCasino, Kajitabi or Mystino, so if you want to play Hold’em against other people with real money, that is where to go. Second, live Casino Hold’em is the closest thing to “real” poker at a regular casino: you see your two cards, the flop, turn and river, and you make the same call-or-fold decision a Hold’em player makes, just against the dealer instead of a table of opponents.
Reviews: where to play poker online from Japan
Each mini-review covers what poker you actually get, the sign-up offer through our link, how you pay, and the catch. For the full picture follow the link to our Japanese review — those are re-checked every week from a Japanese IP.
1. Stake — the only real poker room on our list
Stake (ステークカジノ) runs its own multiplayer room, Stake Poker, inside the same account and wallet as the casino and sportsbook. You open it from the “Stake Poker” item in the casino menu, which launches the poker client. When we checked on September 27, 2026, the official poker page showed “305 playing”, and the lobby offered No-Limit Hold’em, Pot-Limit Omaha with four, five or six cards, Pineapple and All-in or Fold, in cash games, Sit & Go, multi-table tournaments (mystery bounty, knockout, satellites) and the fast-fold format “Next!”.

What makes it good value is the rakeback: Stake returns 3.5% of the rake you pay at the poker tables, credited to the Rakeback tab of the VIP page, and poker rake also counts towards VIP progress. Stakes start low — Next! cash tables from $0.01/$0.02 and JAQKpot! Sit & Gos from a $0.50 buy-in — so you can learn without risking much.
| Poker games | NLH, PLO4, PLO5, PLO6, Pineapple, All-in or Fold |

2. Vera&John — best for live Casino Hold’em in English
Vera&John was founded in 2011 and it is the easiest site on this list to use in English. There is no poker room, but the “Poker” lobby is well stocked. On October 5, 2026 the live section listed Casino Hold’em (26 players seated when we looked), Bet on Poker Live, live Video Poker (25 players), Casino Hold’em Live from Paris and 2 Hand Casino Hold’em. The table-games section added six RNG titles: Three Card Poker Deluxe, Hold’em Poker, High Hand Hold’em Poker, Casino Hold’em Poker, Russian Poker and In Between Poker.

3. Kajitabi — the widest choice of live poker variants
Kajitabi (カジ旅, also spelled CasiTabi) wraps its casino in a role-playing game, but for poker players the draw is the live lobby. Choose the “Poker” tab and you get Casino Hold’em in three versions, Extreme Texas Hold’em, Texas Hold’em Bonus, Caribbean Stud, Triple Card Poker, Bet on Poker and a live Jacks or Better video poker — nine tables, all against the dealer, most from $0.50 a hand. Kajitabi’s own guide describes Casino Hold’em as “Texas Hold’em played as a two-player game between the player and the dealer”.

| Table (as named in the lobby) | Game type | Bet range (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| CASINO HOLD’EM | Casino Hold’em | 0.5–3,000 |

4. InterCasino — Vera&John’s poker line-up with a different welcome
InterCasino belongs to the same operator as Vera&John and shares its game platform, so the poker lobby is the same: live Casino Hold’em (marked “popular” when we visited), Bet on Poker, live Video Poker, Casino Hold’em Live from Paris and 2 Hand Casino Hold’em, plus five RNG poker games (In Between Poker, which Vera&John has, was not in its list). Pick InterCasino over Vera&John if you prefer its welcome offer, its darker interface or its arcade section.

| Sign-up offer (our link) | 50 free spins × $0.20 on Tempura Princess (30x) |
| Poker on offer | 5 live poker tables + 5 RNG poker games |
| Payments | Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex; Payz, Vega Wallet; bank transfer; BTC, ETH, USDT, LTC, BCH, XRP |
| Operator / licence | Breckenridge Curaçao B.V. / Curaçao OGL/2024/175/0182 |

5. Mystino — poker with a yen balance and a no-deposit start
Mystino’s live casino has a “Poker” row under the game shows, and on October 3, 2026 it listed Casino Hold’em, Bet on Poker Live, Video Poker and Casino Hold’em Live (Paris). It is a good fit if you want to keep your balance in yen, and the ¥2,000 no-deposit offer through our link (¥1,000 for the casino and a ¥1,000 sports free bet) lets you look around before paying in. Poker counts 10% towards casino bonus wagering, as at Vera&John.

| Sign-up offer (our link) | ¥2,000 free: ¥1,000 casino bonus + ¥1,000 free bet, no deposit |
| Payments | Visa, Mastercard, JCB; Payz, Vega Wallet; bank transfer for withdrawals |
| Operator / licence | Hypergames International Limitada / Anjouan ALSI-202505010-FI1 |

Also worth a look: Yuugado — the same poker lobby in yen
Yuugado (遊雅堂) is Vera&John’s yen-based sister site, run by the same operator under the same licence. Its “Poker” page on October 5, 2026 showed the same live tables — Casino Hold’em, Bet on Poker, Video Poker Live, Casino Hold’em Live (Paris) and 2 Hand Casino Hold’em — followed by the RNG games. Through our link you get ¥1,500 for the casino and a ¥1,500 sports free bet with no deposit, which is enough to try a few hands of live Casino Hold’em at the lowest stake.

Full review in Japanese: Yuugado review
Not ranked: Queen Casino — a poker section, but check the licence first
Queen Casino lists a QUEENPoker tile among its “QUEEN Originals”; opening it on October 5, 2026 showed a “Welcome to BCPoker — please log in to continue” screen, so the tables are only visible to account holders. The casino also has Caribbean Stud and several video poker games. Before you deposit, note the licence status: on the Curaçao Gaming Authority register (checked October 2, 2026) Queen Casino’s licence OGL/2024/1635/0968 is listed as “Expired”, and the CGA seal in its own footer read “Revoked” on October 5.
| Poker on offer | QUEENPoker (login required), Caribbean Stud, Video Poker, Deuces Wild |
| Payments | Crypto and PachiWallet; withdrawals capped at €10,000 a month |
| Operator / licence | Lucifer N.V. / Curaçao OGL/2024/1635/0968 (“Expired” on the CGA register) |

Poker vs casino poker vs video poker: which one are you playing?
Before you deposit anywhere, decide which kind of poker you want. The three types look similar on screen but they work in completely different ways, and that changes how you win, how much skill matters and what the site earns from you.
Player-vs-player poker (poker rooms)
You play against other real players for the pot. The casino does not care who wins; it takes the rake — a small percentage of each pot, normally with a cap — or a fee built into each tournament buy-in. Skill matters a lot here: over thousands of hands, better players win money from weaker ones. Stake Poker is this type.
Casino poker (against the dealer)
Casino Hold’em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud and Texas Hold’em Bonus use poker hands but pay fixed odds against the house, like blackjack. You make one or two decisions per hand, and the house edge — around 2% to 5% of the ante — decides the long-run result. Every casino on our list has these, live and RNG.
Video poker
A machine deals five cards, you choose which to hold, and the pay table decides the return. Jacks or Better with the full 9/6 pay table returns about 99.54% with perfect strategy, which makes it one of the best-paying games in any casino. Our Japanese guide to video poker covers the strategy.
| Type | You play against | How the site earns | Skill effect | Where (checked) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poker room | Other players | Rake (part of each pot) or tournament fee | Large | Stake |
| Casino poker | The dealer | House edge (≈2–5%) | Small | All sites on this page |
| Video poker | A machine | Pay table | Medium (hold strategy) | Vera&John, Kajitabi, Queen, Mystino |
Stake Poker: the player-vs-player room in detail
Because it is the only real poker room open to players in Japan among the sites we checked, Stake Poker deserves a closer look. Everything below comes from the official site and Stake’s help centre, opened from a Japanese IP on September 27, 2026.
Games and formats
| Game | Hole cards | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Texas Hold’em | 2 | Best five cards from your two plus five community cards; the easiest place to start |
| Omaha (PLO4 / PLO5 / PLO6) | 4 / 5 / 6 | Must use exactly two hole cards and three board cards |
| Pineapple | 3 | Discard one hole card before the turn |
| All-in or Fold (AoF) | 2 | Your only options are all-in or fold |
| Format | How it works |
|---|---|
| Cash games (ring games) | Sit down and leave whenever you like; chips equal money |
| Sit & Go | Small tournaments that start as soon as the seats fill |
| Mystery bounty / knockout | Prizes for each player you eliminate |
| Satellites and multi-flight | Win seats to bigger tournaments |
| Next! (fast-fold) | Fold and move straight to a new hand at another table; starts with 4+ players |
Table features
Stake Poker supports rabbit hunting (see the cards that would have come after a hand ends), running it up to four times when two players are all-in, straddles and re-straddles at Hold’em and Omaha tables with four or more players, and a “remove chips” option at AoF tables. You can also self-exclude from poker separately from the casino and sportsbook.
Poker promotions running until December 31, 2026
| Promotion | What you get | Period |
|---|---|---|
| JAQKpot! | 3-handed hyper-turbo Sit & Go; prize pool drawn before the start, up to 20,000× the buy-in; buy-ins $0.50, $2, $10, $50 | Jun 30 – Dec 31, 2026 |
| Next! drops | Random drops of 3–100 big blinds at Next! 6-max tables ($0.01/$0.02 to $0.25/$0.50); $1,000,000 in total | Mar 4 – Dec 31, 2026 |
| All-in or Fold jackpot | Win with a straight flush or better using both hole cards to share $500,000 | Oct 6, 2025 – Dec 31, 2026 |
| Bad Beat Jackpot | Lose with a very strong hand (e.g. four deuces or better in Hold’em) at eligible ring tables | Jun 30, 2025 – Dec 31, 2026 |
Source: Stake promotions page, checked from a Japanese IP on September 27, 2026. Promotions can end early when the prize money runs out.

A word on JAQKpot!: the official multiplier table shows that about nine in ten games pay 2× or 3× the buy-in, winner takes all, while the 20,000× top prize comes up once in ten million games. It is a lottery-style format — fun at $0.50, not a way to build a bankroll.
Live dealer poker games you can play at Japanese-facing casinos
If no poker room is available to you, live dealer poker is the next best thing. These are the games we saw in the lobbies, with the rules you need and the typical house edge with good basic play.
Casino Hold’em
You bet an ante and get two cards; the dealer gets two face down and three community cards (the flop) are dealt. Now you either fold and lose the ante, or call for twice the ante. The turn and river follow, and your best five of seven cards are compared with the dealer’s. The dealer must have a pair of fours or better to qualify; if not, your ante is paid by the pay table and your call is returned.
| Your hand (when you call and win) | Ante pays (typical table) | Call pays |
|---|---|---|
| Royal flush | 100 to 1 | 1 to 1 |
| Straight flush | 20 to 1 | 1 to 1 |
| Four of a kind | 10 to 1 | 1 to 1 |
| Full house | 3 to 1 | 1 to 1 |
| Flush | 2 to 1 | 1 to 1 |
| Straight or lower | 1 to 1 | 1 to 1 |
Pay tables vary by table; check the rules screen before you play.
Three Card Poker
Only three cards each, so the hand order changes: a straight is rarer than a flush with three cards, so it ranks higher. We counted all 22,100 possible three-card hands: you get a pair or better 25.6% of the time, which means three hands in four are decided by the high card. The Pair Plus side bet, with a common pay table (straight flush 40:1, three of a kind 30:1, straight 6:1, flush 3:1, pair 1:1), carries a house edge of 7.28%.
| Hand | Combinations | Probability | Pair Plus pays (example) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight flush | 48 | 0.217% | 40 to 1 |
| Three of a kind | 52 | 0.235% | 30 to 1 |
| Straight | 720 | 3.258% | 6 to 1 |
| Flush | 1,096 | 4.959% | 3 to 1 |
| Pair | 3,744 | 16.941% | 1 to 1 |
| High card | 16,440 | 74.389% | — |
Our calculation over all 22,100 three-card hands (calc_mesa.py, October 3, 2026).
Caribbean Stud, Texas Hold’em Bonus and Bet on Poker
Caribbean Stud is five-card stud against the dealer and has the highest house edge of the group (about 5.22%). Texas Hold’em Bonus and Extreme Texas Hold’em let you bet at several streets, much like Ultimate Texas Hold’em (about 2.19%). Bet on Poker is different: you do not play a hand, you bet on which of several hands will win, with odds that change as the cards come out.

What a session costs on average
House edge is the average loss per unit of ante, so average hourly loss ≈ ante × house edge × hands per hour. With a $5 ante at 60 hands an hour, Casino Hold’em costs about $6.50 an hour on average, while Caribbean Stud costs about $15.70 — more than twice as much for a game that feels the same.
| Game | House edge (approx.) | 40 hands/hour, $5 ante | 60 hands/hour, $5 ante |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casino Hold’em | 2.16% | ≈ $4.30 | ≈ $6.50 |
| Ultimate Texas Hold’em | 2.19% | ≈ $4.40 | ≈ $6.60 |
| Three Card Poker (ante) | 3.37% | ≈ $6.70 | ≈ $10.10 |
| Caribbean Stud | 5.22% | ≈ $10.40 | ≈ $15.70 |

Is poker legal in Japan?
Japanese law treats poker for money like any other game of chance: the Penal Code (Articles 185–187) prohibits gambling in general, and there is no skill-game exemption for poker. Japan also has no licensing system for online casinos or poker rooms, so the sites Japanese players use are licensed abroad — in Curaçao or Anjouan for the sites on this page. Poker without money at stake is a different matter, and that is what the legal live scene is built on (next section).
How the law applies depends on where you are, so check the rules of your country of residence before you play. For the full picture — public gambling, the 2025 amendment, the Smart Live case and how to verify a licence — read our guide Is online gambling legal in Japan?.
The live poker scene in Japan: amusement poker explained
Japan’s poker boom is real: Tokyo, Osaka and other big cities have poker bars and “amusement casinos” where you can play Hold’em tournaments most nights. They are legal because they are built so that no money can be won.
How amusement poker bars work
You pay an entry or table fee and receive chips for the evening. The chips have no cash value: you cannot exchange them for money or prizes when you leave. What you play for is the game itself, a ranking or points on the house leaderboard, and at many venues the chance to win tickets to bigger tournaments.
This follows from the Amusement Business Act (風営法, Act No. 122 of 1948). Its Article 2(1)(v) covers venues that let customers play on gaming equipment, and the National Public Safety Commission rules name “roulette tables, playing cards and card tables” among that equipment (Enforcement Regulations, Article 3(v)). Article 23(2) of the Act then forbids those venues from giving prizes according to the result of play.
Tips for visitors
- Bring photo ID in case the venue asks you to register as a member.
- Ask about the fee structure: entry, re-entry and drink fees are usually listed at the counter.
- Expect tournaments more than cash games, since chips cannot be cashed out.
- JOPT festivals have an English counter; at small bars a translation app helps.
What is not allowed
Any game in Japan where players’ money forms the prize pool or chips can be cashed out is gambling under the Penal Code, whatever the venue calls itself. Stick to venues that make the no-cash-prize model clear.
Japan Open Poker Tour (JOPT): dates, prizes and how to enter
The Japan Open Poker Tour is the biggest live poker series in the country. Its English guide headlines a $5.5M total prize pool, 125 tournaments, 50,000+ participants and 160 tables, and describes JOPT as one of the largest poker festivals in Asia (japanopenpoker.com/english, checked October 5, 2026).

How prizes work at JOPT
JOPT is explicit about it: because gambling is restricted by law in Japan, it is “not legally possible to offer cash prizes” for winning a poker tournament. Prizes are offered instead in the form of USDT (Tether) or a player contract, awarded to players who finish in the paid places.
How to enter as a foreign visitor
- Read the Players Guide (English) and pick your tournament.
- Install the free GameID app and register by the day before; if you have no Japanese phone number, set the country to Japan and enter zeros (e.g. 0000000000), as JOPT instructs.
- Go to the tournament counter — there is an English counter on the right as you enter the Takadanobaba venue.
- Pay the entry fee: cash (JPY), credit card, USDT, POKERWEB COIN, IC transport cards such as Suica or ICOCA, Rakuten Edy, iD, QuickPay, WeChat Pay or Alipay.
- Take your receipt to your seat, or to the chip counter if no seat number is printed.
Qualifying online with JOPT Games
JOPT’s official app, JOPT Games, runs online qualifiers. For Tokyo #03, Online Day 1 flights ran on September 25–27 and October 2–4, 2026 at 19:00, each needing three “Final Tickets”; players who got through advance to Main Event Day 2 at Bellesalle Takadanobaba. Tickets come from winning earlier stages, buying them on JOPT’s online shop, or the SILVER and GOLD subscriptions, which are required for the satellite and final stages.

Free poker apps in Japan: practise without real money
Japan has a lively scene of no-cash poker apps where you play for points. They are a good way to learn the flow of Hold’em before you try live tables or a real-money room.
m HOLD’EM
m HOLD’EM is a Texas Hold’em app for iOS and Android played with “m points”. It has ranked ring games with rooms at different point levels, private clubs where a member hosts ring games or Sit & Go and multi-table tournaments, and a lesson mode with more than 20 chapters of basic strategy. Real-money casinos also let you try many RNG table games in demo mode; live dealer poker, by contrast, is almost always real money only.
Texas Hold’em rules in 5 minutes
Texas Hold’em is the game at nearly every poker table in Japan, online and live. A hand runs through four betting rounds, and the player with the best five-card hand at showdown — or the last player left — wins the pot.
| Round | Cards dealt | What to think about |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-flop | Two hole cards to each player | Is this hand worth playing from your position? |
| Flop | Three community cards | Did you make a hand or a draw? |
| Turn | Fourth community card | What does the size of your opponent’s bet say about their hand? |
| River | Fifth community card | Bet, call or fold with your final hand |
| Showdown | — | Remaining players show; best five cards win |
Blinds and actions
Each hand, the two players to the left of the dealer button post forced bets: the small blind and the big blind. A cash table marked “$0.01/$0.02” means a 1-cent small blind and a 2-cent big blind. On your turn you can check (if nobody has bet), bet, call, raise, fold or go all-in.
No-limit, pot-limit and fixed-limit
In no-limit you can bet all your chips at any time; it is the standard for Hold’em. In pot-limit the biggest bet is the size of the pot, which is normal for Omaha. In fixed-limit each bet has a set size, so swings are smaller — a good place for beginners to start.
How Omaha differs
Omaha deals four hole cards (five in PLO5, six in PLO6) and you must use exactly two of them with three from the board. You cannot make a flush with one suited hole card. With more cards, strong hands come up far more often, so a hand that looks great in Hold’em is often only average in Omaha.
For starting-hand charts and position play, see our Japanese guide to Texas Hold’em strategy.
Poker hand rankings and how often each hand comes up
The ranking is the same in every Hold’em, Omaha and five-card game. The table shows how likely each hand is in five random cards and how often it ends up as the final hand in Texas Hold’em, where you choose the best five of seven.
| Rank | Hand | Example | 5-card probability | Final hand in Hold’em (7 cards) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Royal flush | A K Q J 10 same suit | 0.00015% | 0.030% (incl. straight flush) |
| 2 | Straight flush | 9 8 7 6 5 same suit | 0.0014% | — |
| 3 | Four of a kind | 7 7 7 7 K | 0.024% | 0.169% |
| 4 | Full house | Q Q Q 5 5 | 0.144% | 2.599% |
| 5 | Flush | Any five of one suit | 0.197% | 3.061% |
| 6 | Straight | Five in a row | 0.392% | 4.583% |
| 7 | Three of a kind | 8 8 8 K 3 | 2.11% | 4.826% |
| 8 | Two pair | J J 4 4 A | 4.75% | 23.381% |
| 9 | One pair | 10 10 K 6 2 | 42.26% | 43.879% |
| 10 | High card | No pair | 50.12% | 17.473% |
Seven-card column: our simulation of 1,000,000 Hold’em hands (calc_mesa.py, seed 20261003).
Two things stand out. With seven cards, a straight (4.58%) is more common than a flush (3.06%), and only about one hand in six ends with no pair at all. And because everyone shares the same five board cards, a pair that looks strong to you is often matched or beaten by an opponent.
Basic poker strategy for new players
Play fewer hands, but play them hard
Most beginners lose by playing too many weak hands. Start with strong pairs, high cards and suited connectors, raise when you enter a pot rather than just calling, and fold the rest. Tight and aggressive beats loose and passive at low stakes.
Position is power
Acting last lets you see what everyone else does first. Play more hands from the button and the cut-off, fewer from the blinds and early seats.
Manage your bankroll
Keep the money you bring to the tables separate from everyday money, and move up only when you can comfortably absorb a bad run. Tournaments swing far more than cash games — Stake’s own advice says the same.
Beat the rake, not just your opponents
In a poker room the pot is shared between the players, and then the rake comes out. Take a common “5%, capped at $3” structure: on a $100 pot you pay $3 (3.0%), on a $20 pot $1 (5.0%). Small pots are taxed hardest. In tournaments, “$10+$1” means $10 to the prize pool and $1 fee — 9.1% of what you pay. Rakeback (3.5% at Stake Poker) softens this slightly, but your edge over the table still has to beat the rake.
| Pot size | Rake (example) | Taken | Share of the pot |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 5%, cap $3 | $3.00 | 3.0% |
| $40 | 5%, cap $3 | $2.00 | 5.0% |
| $20 | 5%, cap $3 | $1.00 | 5.0% |
Avoid tilt
After a bad beat it is easy to start playing emotionally. If you notice it, take a break or stop for the day. Reviewing your hand histories later is one of the fastest ways to improve.
Online vs live poker
Online, hands run two to three times faster than at a live table and you can play several tables at once. You lose the physical tells, so bet sizes, timing and patterns become your main information. Start with one table until your decisions feel routine.
Poker formats explained: cash games, Sit & Go, MTT and fast-fold
The same Texas Hold’em hand plays very differently depending on the format around it. Before you deposit, decide which format suits the time and money you have — it changes how much you need, how long a session lasts and how big the swings are.
Cash games
Chips equal real money and you can sit down or leave at any moment. Stakes are written as the blinds: in a “$0.05/$0.10” game the small blind is 5 cents and the big blind 10 cents, and a normal buy-in is 100 big blinds, or $10. Cash games suit short sessions and steady, slower learning, because every decision is about the hand in front of you rather than about surviving a structure.
Sit & Go (S&G)
A small tournament that starts as soon as the seats are filled — usually 6 or 9 players. Everyone pays the same buy-in, the blinds rise on a timer, and the top places are paid (typically the top 2 or 3). A session has a clear start and end, often 30 to 60 minutes, which makes S&Gs a good bridge between cash games and big tournaments.
Multi-table tournaments (MTT)
Scheduled events with dozens to thousands of entrants. Players are moved between tables as others bust, and roughly the top 10–15% of the field are paid, with the largest prizes concentrated at the final table. MTTs offer the biggest return on a small buy-in but also the biggest variance: even strong players cash in only a minority of tournaments and can go long stretches without a deep run. Late-registration and re-entry rules change the true cost of an event — check them first.
Fast-fold and all-in-or-fold
In fast-fold poker you are moved to a new table with new cards the moment you fold, so you see far more hands per hour. All-in-or-fold (AoF, offered in Stake Poker’s lobby) strips the game down to one decision per hand: shove or fold. Both are fun and quick, but the higher hand volume also means money moves faster in both directions.
| Format | Typical session | How you are paid | Swings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash game | Any length | Chips = money, leave any time | Lowest |
| Sit & Go | 30–60 minutes | Top 2–3 of 6–9 players | Medium |
| MTT | 2–10+ hours | About top 10–15% of the field | Highest |
| Fast-fold / AoF | Any length | Chips = money | Medium–high (more hands per hour) |
How much money each format needs
A common rule of thumb among poker coaches is to keep at least 20–30 buy-ins for the cash-game level you play, 50 or more for Sit & Gos, and 100 or more for multi-table tournaments, because the swings grow with the field size. Worked example: with a $200 budget, that points to $0.05/$0.10 cash games ($10 buy-in = 20 buy-ins), $2 Sit & Gos (100 buy-ins) or $1–2 MTTs. These are guidelines, not guarantees — the point is to choose a level where one bad night cannot empty your account.
| Format | Buy-ins to keep (rule of thumb) | Example with a $200 budget |
|---|---|---|
| Cash games | 20–30 | $0.05/$0.10 tables ($10 buy-in) |
| Sit & Go | 50+ | $2–$4 buy-ins |
| MTT | 100+ | $1–$2 buy-ins |
Choosing a format if you are in Japan
Time zones matter: the busiest English-language tournament schedules run on European and American evenings, which fall in the Japanese night and early morning. If you play after work in Japan, cash games and Sit & Gos fit better than long MTTs that may finish at 4 a.m. Live dealer games such as Casino Hold’em (see above) are always available, but remember they are played against the house, not other players, so the house edge applies instead of rake.
Poker bonuses: what actually counts
Casino bonuses are built around slots, and poker counts for very little. Read the contribution table before you take a bonus you mean to play off at the poker tables.
| Site | Poker contribution to wagering | Max bet with bonus | Poker-specific perk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vera&John / Casino Secret | Table games incl. poker 10% | $25 | — |
| Kajitabi | Casino Hold’em, Texas Hold’em Poker, Oasis Poker 10%; video poker up to 30% | $5 | — |
| Mystino | Other table games incl. poker 10% | See terms | — |
| Stake | No classic deposit bonus | — | 3.5% rakeback on poker rake |
Terms read on October 3, 2026 (Vera&John, Casino Secret, Kajitabi, Mystino) and September 27, 2026 (Stake).
In practice: a $300 wagering requirement played only at poker tables counting 10% means $3,000 in bets. If you want a bonus mainly to try the games, a no-deposit offer is the cleaner choice — see our list of no deposit bonuses for Japan. If you play a lot of poker, rakeback is worth more than a welcome bonus over time.

How we tested these poker sites
We are an affiliate site built on the Japanese market. Every brand on this page was opened from a Japanese IP address through the same partner links you click here: Stake on September 27, Kajitabi and Mystino on October 3, Vera&John, InterCasino and Queen Casino on October 5, 2026. For each one we checked whether a player-vs-player poker room exists, which live and RNG poker games are in the lobby, the sign-up offer, how poker counts towards bonus wagering, payment methods and the operator and licence in the footer and on the regulator’s register. We did not include poker rooms we could not open from Japan, and where we could not see something we left it out rather than guess. Commissions never decide a position.

Online poker in Japan: FAQ
Q. Can I play online poker in Japan?
A. Among the sites we checked that accept Japanese players, Stake has a real player-vs-player poker room (Stake Poker), and Vera&John, InterCasino, Kajitabi and Mystino offer live and RNG poker against the dealer. Japan has no licensing system for online poker, so these sites are licensed abroad; check the rules where you live before you play.
Q. Is poker legal in Japan?
A. Poker for money is treated as gambling under the Penal Code (Articles 185–187); there is no skill-game exemption. Amusement poker — bars and tournaments where chips have no cash value and no cash prizes are paid — operates legally under the Amusement Business Act.
Q. What is the best online poker site for players in Japan?
A. For poker against other players, Stake Poker: Hold’em, Omaha (PLO4/5/6), Pineapple and All-in or Fold, cash games and tournaments from $0.01/$0.02, and 3.5% rakeback (checked September 27, 2026). For live Casino Hold’em in English, Vera&John.
Q. Can I play poker in Japanese yen?
A. Yes at casinos with a yen balance: Mystino, Vera&John and InterCasino accept JPY. Kajitabi uses US dollars, and Stake Poker runs on crypto only.
Q. How do poker bars in Tokyo work?
A. You pay an entry or table fee and get chips with no cash value. You play for the game, rankings and tournament tickets, not money. The Amusement Business Act forbids these venues from giving prizes based on results (Article 23(2)).
Q. When is the next Japan Open Poker Tour?
A. JOPT 2026 Tokyo #03 runs October 8–12, 2026 at Bellesalle Takadanobaba, Shinjuku, followed by Osaka #02 from October 29 to November 3, 2026 and 2027 Tokyo #01 from December 24, 2026 to January 3, 2027 (JOPT events page, October 5, 2026).
Q. Can foreigners play at JOPT?
A. Yes. JOPT has an English guide and an English counter at its Takadanobaba venue. You need the free GameID app (set the country to Japan and enter zeros if you have no Japanese number) and can pay in yen, by card, USDT, IC cards and more.
Q. Does JOPT pay cash prizes?
A. No. JOPT says it is not legally possible to offer cash prizes for winning a poker tournament in Japan; prizes are offered as USDT (Tether) or a player contract instead.
Q. Can I practise poker for free?
A. Yes. m HOLD’EM is a points-based Hold’em app with ranked games, clubs and a lesson mode, and many casino RNG poker games have a demo mode. Live dealer poker is almost always real money only.
Q. Which casino poker game has the lowest house edge?
A. Of the live games we found, Casino Hold’em (about 2.16%) and Ultimate Texas Hold’em (about 2.19%) are the cheapest; Caribbean Stud is the most expensive at about 5.22%. Video poker such as 9/6 Jacks or Better returns about 99.54% with perfect play.
Q. Can I use a casino bonus for poker?
A. Usually, but poker counts little: 10% at Vera&John, Casino Secret, Kajitabi and Mystino, with maximum bets of $25 (Vera&John) or $5 (Kajitabi) while playing with bonus money. Stake has no deposit bonus but pays 3.5% rakeback on poker rake.
Q. What is rakeback?
A. Rakeback returns part of the rake you pay at poker tables. Stake Poker returns 3.5% of your rake to the Rakeback tab of the VIP page, where you can claim it at any time.
Poker should be fun. Set a budget and a time limit before you sit down, never chase losses, and play within the laws where you live. Over 18s only (20+ at some sites for Japanese residents).
